Alumni Stories: Brooklyn Washington in France
Can you tell us a little about where you studied abroad and what drew you to that location?
In Fall 2024, I studied abroad in Aix en Provence, France. I chose this location because of its rich language and culture immersion program, which allowed me to complete my last four French classes for my minor.
Looking back, what were your biggest takeaways from the experience — personally or academically?
My biggest takeaway from this experience was how much I learned about myself. Living abroad on my own for the first time revealed both my strengths and weaknesses. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone, encouraged me to meet new people, taught me how to work through challenges, and strengthened my self efficacy.
How did Joy Worldwide’s support shape or enhance your study abroad journey?
Joy Worldwide's support significantly enhanced my study abroad experience. Their scholarship program included access to Babbel, an online language-learning platform, that helped me with my French grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. I used it as a study tool before exams and did short interactive lessons that boosted my confidence in class.
What was the most memorable or impactful moment from your time abroad?
My most impactful moment during my time abroad was building relationships with my French friends and locals. They made me feel welcomed and comfortable in my environment. Another unforgettable aspect about studying abroad was traveling to nearby cities in France and other countries. This expanded my cultural awareness, and global perspective on life, and different traditions and customs.
How has studying abroad influenced what you’re doing now or what you hope to do next?
Studying abroad has changed and inspired my future career path and life goals. I hope to work abroad for at least two years in France, or any other French speaking country - while practicing as a Physician Assistant. In addition, I aspire to become an abroad missionary. Traveling to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, and evangelizing to communities all over the world.
