To dive deeper into her experience, we asked Jakari two questions: What does your submitted photo represent to you? and How has your study abroad experience already impacted or changed you? Her reflections reveal personal growth, newfound perspectives, and unforgettable memories shaped by her time abroad.

What does your submitted photo represent to you?

My submitted photo represents one of the most meaningful moments from my study abroad experience in Belize at the San Ignacio Resort Horel Green Iguana Conservation Project. Holding an injured green iguana while learning about the conservation efforts to protect this endangered species gave me a new appreciation for the role veterinary medicine plays in wildlife conservation. It also reminded me that although some animals are harmed, neglected, or unable to survive on their own, veterinarians and conservationists have the power to provide them with the care and second chance they deserve. Seeing the dedication of this project inspired me to continue pursuing a career where I can advocate and care for animals in need. This photo reminds me that compassion, education, and conservation can make a lasting difference in the lives of both animals and the communities that protect them.

How has your study abroad experience impacted or changed you?

My study abroad experience pushed me outside of my comfort zone and exceeded every expectation I had. As the only African American student and the only HBCU student in my cohort, I was honored to represent Southern University and A&M College and students from underrepresented backgrounds who aspire to study abroad. I gained a global perspective on veterinary medicine while developing greater confidence in my ability to adapt, learn, and connect with people from different cultures. Being blessed with this opportunity showed me that all of my hard work is paying off and reminded me that even when times become challenging, I am one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The lessons, confidence, and perspective I gained in Belize will continue to shape me throughout my future career.
