Student Spotlight: Betty Eagan in England

What is one challenge you experienced during your first month? How did you overcome it?

One challenge that I have experience during my first month is not being in close proximity to my community back home. This has made me eager to branch out and make new connections with the people that I’m meeting at my university. It has also encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and build a new community here in London.

What similarities and differences have you noticed between your host culture and your own culture?

One similarity that I have noticed is the diversity of people in London. I am originally from Atlanta so I wasn’t sure if that was going to be a culture shock that I would experience, but I have found in London that there are a lot of cultural communities here. One difference I’ve noticed is the food. Contrary to popular belief, the food in London is actually a lot better than I expected!

Have you stepped outside of your comfort zone yet? What did that feel like?

In London, the structure of the courses is heavily seminar-based, whereas in the States, our courses are more heavily coursework-based. Because of this, class discussions are a very prominent part of what we do, which has made me step outside of my comfort zone. Although it was challenging at first, I’m becoming more comfortable sharing my thoughts and participating in discussions.
