Student Spotlight: Zaria Samuel in Colombia

What’s one challenge you’ve already encountered? How are you navigating it so far?

“One challenge I’ve encountered so far is adjusting to the language and giving myself grace as I continue to learn Spanish. All of my classes, most of my friends, and my roommates speak only Spanish, which is both an incredible gift and an exciting stretch for me. While it can be mentally exhausting at times to understand and express myself fully, I’m embracing it as part of the journey.

To navigate this, I remind myself daily that learning is a process and progress is worth celebrating. I make space for practice in fun, meaningful ways like listening to Spanish music, watching Spanish shows, and reading in Spanish. Each moment of practice helps me not only envision myself reaching fluency, but also appreciate how much I’m growing along the way.”

What differences (or unexpected similarities) have you noticed between your culture and your host culture?

“One beautiful similarity I’ve noticed between caleño culture and African American culture is the warmth of the people and their genuine willingness to share every part of their heritage. In African American culture, we love to welcome loved ones and embrace anyone who feels othered as part of our family. I’m grateful to have felt that same embrace here in Colombia.

From warm hugs and cheek kisses to open invitations to join in traditions, the people of Cali have created a safe, welcoming space for me to practice my Spanish and immerse myself in their way of life. One unforgettable moment was being invited to dance a traditional Pacific dance alongside natives from Colombia’s Pacific coast. Experiences like this have been a fabulous reminder of home while also deepening my connection to my host culture, making me feel both safe and celebrated.”

Have you stepped outside of your comfort zone yet? What did that feel like?

“I have absolutely stepped outside of my comfort zone, honestly, every single day! Being fully immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment, where I’m speaking, hearing, and practicing Spanish 24/7, naturally pushes me to grow. One of my most memorable moments was diving headfirst into Calle de Sabor, a vibrant festival held every Friday and Saturday that celebrates the roots of salsa and caleño culture. I ventured deep into the lively crowd with my classmates and local friends, surrounded by music, laughter, and the rhythm of the city.

At first, my heart was racing and I felt a mix of nerves and excitement. But then I reminded myself that this is exactly why I chose to study abroad: to embrace the unknown, to say yes to new experiences, and to soak up everything Colombia has to offer. Stepping into that moment felt like stepping into the heartbeat of Cali, and I walked away feeling braver, more connected, and even more grateful for this journey.”
